Sozo 2014-2026

Sozo was adopted August of 2014 as a grad school graduation present for Leah. When we initally went to the pound to meet her there was a sign saying she had already been adopted. Heartbroken, Leah reached the one finger she could fit through the cage door to stroke Sozo’s paw and told her “I don’t know how but you’re going to be my puppy.” A few days later Leah checked the pound website again and saw Sozo (the pound called her Dolly) back up on the website! She called to confirm it wasn’t a glitch and the pound explained that the lady who had adopted Sozo brought her back, not wanting to deal with the meds she needed for kennel cough. Leah and Tommy raced to the pound to make it there before they closed. Leah ran inside (without really waiting for the car to completely park) and Sozo became ours for keeps.

As she recovered from kennel cough we realized she was much more spunky than we realized. Often jumping on top of various things and even in her old age with weakening hips continuing to jump over our baby gates. She was mostly a quiet pup but was known to howl if she felt we’d forgotten her outside or wasn’t sure where we were. She was the best cuddler, so sweet and tolerant with our kids. Loved by everyone who met her. We won’t be having a funeral service but we’ve reflected that if we did it would be a very well attended dog funeral, perhaps moreso than even some people funerals.

Sozo was preceeded in death by her brother Sully, and is survived by Leah, Tommy, and the two precious boys who have always known her as their dog, as well as her dog friends Levi, Maggie, and Sadie, and countless other friends of the family.

Seeing her health decline has been hard and having to make the decision to let her pass vs letting her continue to suffer more and more was hard as well. We miss her immensely and Leah is insistent we not only save up for a stuffed animal replica but also a lifesize bronze statue for the garden.

Thank you to everyone who has loved our pup alongside us all these years.

Lest you think, "I'd love some quaint gravel garden paths!" Let me deinfluence you...

This is what they look like 6 years later. They are a nightmare to keep clear and all the slate has settled uneven and needs to be redone.

Today’s berry harvest:

Blueberries 4lbs 12 oz
Blackberries from the other day 1lb ?oz (we ate a bunch before I weighed)
Blackberries from today 1lb 12oz

Lots of lost berries thanks to the rain and not picking them fast enough.

Several folks have asked how I keep the birds away, answer is I don’t! We have 8 bushes (9? can’t recall) and I think there’s just an abundance that even after the birds there are plenty left for us.

Tonight's berry haul: 5lbs 4oz of blueberries, 10oz of blackberries and raspberries, and so many still left to pick that I invited the nextdoor neighbors to come pick too. Blackberries are either late this year or just not as productive.

First berry harvest of the season! Not-so-little gardener actually let me make it inside with most of them to weigh this year!

2lbs 6oz of blueberries
9.4oz of raspberries
Handful of blackberries

For those who may be wondering: the frost cloth I covered most of the blueberry bushes with when we had that late freeze in March seems to have made zero difference.

Pretty sure ceiling fans were invented for kitchens. This saves us from using our AC as much during the summer and is perfect for keeping cool when you bake or run the slow cooker.

Now I'm off to find a fandelier for my dining room. This summer we're #ceilingfanmaxing

Always a good day when the @men_in_mulch truck pulls up! I met Brian through IG a few years ago when I was in the trenches of gardening with littles and not sure how I would ever get my garden beds mulched.

Now my toddlers stay entertained watching them blow the mulch into place! In addition to mulch they can blow in top soil, compost, and grass seed mix. Excited to have them back this fall to give our lawn a much needed reseed!

(Not an ad, not paid, just super love these guys!)

My grandmother's funeral was today. She was who gave me this love of gardening and farming with summers spent chasing her cows and goats and eating endless blueberries right off the bush.

She will be missed. But every spring flower will forever be a sweet reminder of her 🩷
